Cracker Barrel Revisits Its Logo and Identity Amidst Criticism
Cracker Barrel recently made headlines by bringing back an old logo featuring an elderly man in overalls. However, the question arises: why is this country-style restaurant chain still perceived as “woke”?
Last week, the company decided to part ways with its long-standing mascot, Uncle Herschel, claiming it was a move to “modernize” the brand. After facing backlash on social media—one that even Donald Trump weighed in on—they quickly reversed this decision.
Additionally, Cracker Barrel has made noticeable changes to its website. The previous celebration of various employee resource groups, including initiatives surrounding LGBTQ+ and diversity, has vanished.
This situation isn’t particularly surprising. If we look at the broader trend of corporate progressivism in America, it’s clear that companies often face backlash from consumers, including those who lean towards conservative views. It seems that when brands claim to be “modernizing,” it can often be code for “waking up,” especially if they have misjudged their customer base’s sentiments
However, before we get too comfortable with this change, it’s worth exploring further. It appears that Uncle Herschel might not be the figure the brand’s dedicated fans imagined. There’s a perception that he embodies progressive values, which may not truly reflect the desires of their loyal customer base.
Not convinced? Take a glance at Cracker Barrel’s company website, particularly their 2024 ESG Report. Here, you’ll find details about the representation of women and racial minorities in their board and executive teams.
The report touts its “diverse and highly qualified boards,” claiming a 56% female representation. But honestly, how much does that matter to customers who just want to enjoy some chicken-fried steak?
Interestingly, while Cracker Barrel dropped the controversial “DEI” label, they replaced it with what’s now termed the “Culture and Attribution” department.
Cracker Barrel states, “This reconfiguration has allowed us to highlight our commitment to a culture of hospitality that welcomes everyone.” Yet, the reality is that the concepts of “diversity, equity, and inclusion” have faced challenges, particularly in recent Supreme Court cases.
Moreover, Cracker Barrel emphasizes its efforts to manage social and environmental risks within its supply chain, like animal welfare. They aim to source a significant percentage of food that meets certain standards while trying to shrink their overall energy consumption.
I did reach out to Cracker Barrel to see if they wanted to address this larger trend of “awakening,” or perhaps offer a different narrative altogether. Unfortunately, I received no response.
Meanwhile, since reintroducing Uncle Herschel, there seems to be a recovery in inventory. Just imagine the potential fallout if Cracker Barrel were to abandon its virtue signaling altogether.
A pragmatic first step might be to heed customer feedback and reconsider the leadership at the top.
