Cracker Barrel removes black-eyed peas from its New Year's Day menu

Decline of Black-Eyed Peas at Cracker Barrel

For years, black-eyed peas have held a special place in Southern New Year’s Day traditions. According to Southern food author John Egerton, these peas are thought to bring good luck for the coming year.

Cracker Barrel has been a go-to spot for those wanting to maintain their New Year’s traditions, offering black-eyed peas alongside cornbread or other country-style sides. However, this option seems to have quietly vanished.

In the past, Cracker Barrel promoted the availability of black-eyed peas as part of their New Year’s menu but hasn’t done so for several years now. When contacted for information about this dish, the restaurant stated that they will be serving their usual menu come New Year’s.

Celebrity chef Jason Smith emphasized the dish’s importance, mentioning its deep-rooted connections to the Civil War. During that time, black-eyed peas were often overlooked by Union troops, which made them a vital food source for Southerners and a symbol of good luck.

The dish’s affordability also played a significant role in its popularity, allowing large families to enjoy a nutritious meal. Alongside collard greens and cornbread, black-eyed peas have become essentials on many Southern tables during New Year celebrations.

Cracker Barrel’s chief marketing officer, Sarah Moore, highlighted that their menu decisions aim to balance regional traditions with a national presence. While she mentioned that there’s a focus on local flavors, she also reassured that classic items remain part of their identity amid some public scrutiny regarding their branding changes.

Moore stressed the emotional connection many people have with traditional New Year’s meals. Rachel Love, a Tennessee mother and Cracker Barrel fan, reminisced about her own family traditions involving black-eyed peas and expressed disappointment about their absence from the restaurant’s offerings.

In a landscape where fewer restaurants adhere to such traditions, Smith noted that he values the service that family-run establishments like Cracker Barrel provide. He believes there should be a renewed effort to celebrate these age-old customs.
