Craig Heist, Beloved Broadcaster, Passes Away at 66
Craig Heist, a familiar voice in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore sports broadcasting, has passed away at the age of 66.
His long-time employer, Audacy’s 106.7 “The Fan,” shared the news on Friday, although the cause of his death has not been made public.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and colleague Craig Heist,” the station said in a statement. “He had a remarkable career in the Mid-Atlantic region, working as an anchor, reporter, and postgame host for 106.7 The Fan on the Nationals Radio Network since 2013.”
Heist had a passion for sports and was more than just a broadcaster—he was a husband, a friend, and a genuine sports enthusiast. Many who knew him will miss his infectious smile and laughter. The statement also expressed condolences to his family.
With over 40 years of experience covering sports in the D.C. Metro area, Heist was honored three times as Maryland Sportscaster of the Year. He also had a lengthy tenure at WTOP Radio and made frequent appearances on the MASN Regional Sports Network.
Tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues alike across Baltimore and D.C.
“Craig was a tremendous presence in local sports media for decades, always found in any press box from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore,” commented Tom Schad, a beat writer for The Washington Post. “He was friendly and helpful—such awful news.”
The Orioles, Nationals, and Commanders all expressed their sadness publicly through social media. The Orioles remarked, “We are saddened to hear of Craig Heist’s passing. He covered our team for over 35 years. Our thoughts are with his wife Suzanne and all the friends he made throughout his career.”
Mark Zuckerman, who covers the Nationals, also shared his thoughts on the impact of Heist’s absence.
Zuckerman noted, “Hastie was loud, funny, and had strong opinions—sometimes a bit too strong. Yet everyone loved him because he truly cared about those around him. The DMV press box will feel different without him.”
