Details Emerge About LaGuardia Airport Plane Crash

Recent revelations regarding the tragic plane crash at LaGuardia Airport paint a troubling picture of communications both in the air traffic control tower and on the ground.

It turns out that the fire truck involved in the incident lacked essential equipment to track its position on the runway. There’s uncertainty about whether the driver was able to hear the control tower’s urgent demands to halt before the crash happened, according to officials from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Jennifer Homendy, the chairwoman of the NTSB, mentioned that they even lack clarity on who was overseeing ground operations during the incident. “We don’t know who was in charge of ground control at that moment,” she revealed to reporters two days after an Air Canada aircraft collided with a Port Authority police vehicle and a fire engine late Sunday. This accident resulted in the deaths of two pilots and left many others injured.

Homendy added, “The information we have is inconsistent. Some say it was the ground controller; others say it could have been a local controller.”

Ongoing Investigation into LaGuardia Crash

Additionally, she highlighted that the fire truck was missing a transponder, a crucial device that helps air traffic controllers track vehicles on the runway. “Should the fire truck have had a transponder? Absolutely,” she affirmed. “Controllers need clear information about what’s happening on both the airport surface and in the skies above.”

The NTSB noted that it remains unanswered whether the two officers inside the fire truck heard the control tower’s desperate commands to stop before entering the runway.

Homendy mentioned that investigators are still looking to interview the two survivors from the incident. One has already been released from the hospital, while the other continues to receive treatment.
