Massive Pile-Up in Colorado Involving 75 Vehicles
On Tuesday, a significant chain-reaction crash took place on a highway in Colorado, involving at least 75 vehicles, according to local authorities.
The incident unfolded in the Rocky Mountains, just west of Denver, near the Loveland Ski Area. It contributed to a chaotic series of incidents that morning, with six separate accidents primarily along the same highway, as reported by the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities shared photographs depicting emergency responders aiding drivers at the scene. The crash led to the closure of two lanes heading into Interstate 70. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CODOT) stated, “The closure is due to a serious multi-vehicle crash that occurred this afternoon on the east side of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel. At this time, there is no plan for reopening.”
It appears that the crash transpired on a snow-covered roadway, hinting that winter weather may have contributed to hazardous driving conditions in that mountain area.
This location near the Loveland Ski Area has a reputation for becoming a bottleneck on Interstate 70, particularly during the spring when ski traffic increases due to Denver-area commuters.
So far, authorities have not confirmed any injuries linked to this massive crash.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that various crashes had occurred in the morning, including some involving single vehicles. Specifically, five accidents happened on westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 221, with one also reported on I-40.
The sheriff’s office noted that those earlier incidents had been managed before the significant pile-up occurred near mile marker 216 on eastbound I-70.
About an hour later, both lanes of the highway were closed due to the severity of the accident, and motorists approaching the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel were advised they would be turned back for several hours, according to CODOT.
The sheriff’s office reiterated the importance of safe driving, urging people to slow down, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and prioritize getting to their destinations safely.
The Colorado State Patrol is currently overseeing the investigation into the accident.
