A tragic incident unfolded on a Georgia highway as a family of eight, which included a grandmother, her pregnant daughter, and five children, lost their lives in a devastating six-vehicle crash. This occurred when a tractor-trailer collided with their van on Monday afternoon.
The truck driver, Kane Aaron Hammock, is believed to have been following the 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan too closely when the collision happened, leading to the death of everyone in the vehicle and creating a “chain reaction” that involved four additional cars. The accident took place on Interstate 85 in Commerce, Georgia, around 4 p.m., as noted by officials.
The remains of the family members were found at the crash site, about 106 miles northeast of Atlanta.
While authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims, family members provided names for those affected. Kenya Ramirez and Darwin Ventura were confirmed deceased in the 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan, which Hammock struck, according to relatives.
Ramirez, who was pregnant with their second child, was traveling with her daughter Cale and her mother, Sonia Maribel Ramirez. Sons Justin, Andy, Natali, and Evan were also in the vehicle.
All eight individuals were pronounced dead on the scene, and a significant fire erupted due to the collision.
“I can’t even put into words the shock of it all. It was such a surprise,” shared Mike Roulin, who was involved in the incident. He added that the destruction was so severe he couldn’t recognize the van afterward. “It was just carnage, covering the whole interstate,” he remarked.
Hammock has been charged with multiple offenses, including eight counts of vehicular homicide and one count related to pesticide use.
In a separate but related incident, a van from a Georgia-based no-kill animal shelter, Fur Kids, was involved in an accident while transporting 37 cats to Vermont. The van driver sustained injuries, but fortunately, 32 cats were rescued from the scene. The shelter announced on Facebook that they are assessing the well-being of the rescued animals.
Authorities have not yet released detailed information about the victims, though there are indications that one may have been pregnant, pending the results of an autopsy. The ages of the children ranged from 2 to 16.
Hammock, 33, has been taken into custody and now faces a series of charges, including vehicular homicide and driver negligence. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office arrested him. Meanwhile, the Georgia State Patrol Collision Reconstruction Team is examining the crash, while the National Transportation Safety Board and Georgia State Patrol are collaborating on a safety investigation.
