Milwaukee’s Postseason Chaos
Milwaukee was in complete disarray.
In the fourth inning, Brewers center fielder Sal Frelich experienced a memorable mishap when a home run catch slipped right through his glove. This triggered a series of bizarre events that became one of the most unusual moments of the postseason this year.
With the bases loaded, Dodgers infielder Max Muncy stepped up. He managed to hit an extra-base ball that met Frelich’s glove right at the center field wall. An outfielder tried to hook the ball off the wall but lost control, and it popped back out.
Frelich quickly tossed the ball to shortstop Joey Ortiz, who then threw it to catcher William Contreras just in time for Teoscar Hernandez to score.
The Brewers secured an out against Will Smith at third base for the final out of the inning, pulling off an impressive double play.
Frelich, like so many watching the game at home and at American Family Field, initially appeared bewildered, taking a moment to absorb the unfolding chaos before a smile broke out as he realized the outcome.
The Dodgers challenged the umpire’s decision, but after review, the ruling stood. The umpires confirmed both force-outs at home and third bases were accurate.
Since the ball had exited Frelich’s glove and hit the wall, it was deemed a live ball, requiring all runners to advance to create a force play. This led to visible confusion among the Dodgers’ base runners, resulting in some truly odd moments on the field.
The Brewers were unable to score in the latter half of the inning, leaving the game knotted until Freddie Freeman’s solo home run put the Dodgers in the lead.
