Crazy-strong robotic dogs gear up for moon mission

At the base of Oregon’s majestic Mount Hood, a team of researchers from a consortium of universities and NASA’s Johnson Space Center embarked on a groundbreaking project. Their mission? To prepare a robotic dog named Spirit for the challenging task of navigating the unpredictable terrain of the moon.

Spirit’s rigorous training regime

During five rigorous days of testing in the summer of 2023, Spirit faced numerous challenges: the quadruped robot with its thin metal legs traversed shifting terrain, soft snow and rocky obstacles.

“A legged robot needs to be able to sense what’s happening when it comes into contact with the ground beneath its feet and quickly adjust its locomotion strategy accordingly,” explains project leader Fei-Fei Qiang from the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering.

LASSIE Project: A leap towards planetary exploration

Spirit’s trials are part of the LASSIE project (Legged Autonomous Surface Science in Analogue Environments), a multidisciplinary effort involving engineers, cognitive scientists, geologists and planetary scientists. The team’s goal is to understand the properties of different substrates and improve the ability of robots to walk on these challenging surfaces.

Moving forward, Qian’s team plans to develop more quadrupedal robots to aid in missions. Funded by a $2 million NASA grant, the TRUSSES project (Temporarily, Robots Unite to Surmount Sandy Entrapments, Then Separate) aims to send a group of robots to the Moon that will share knowledge and create estimated maps of movement risks to aid planetary exploration.

Important points about the cart

Though it’s not the moon, Palmer Glacier on Mount Hood in Oregon is a perfect place to practice. Here, Spirit and its future robotic companions will learn to transform into bridge- and pyramid-like structures to overcome obstacles and navigate challenging terrain. This research will not only push the boundaries of technology, it will also inspire us to rethink the possibilities of teamwork in the face of adversity.
