“I thought I’d show them what happens when you get high, and everything falls apart and the band ends,” Shellshock said, recalling trying to read an AA book while the others were snorting cocaine. “I remember saying, ‘If you all won’t get sober with me, I’ll get sober and start a band,’ and I was smoking crack cocaine as I was saying that. I was just a giant fireball of chaos.”

“I was running from my emotions and wallowing in insanity,” he later said, “and enjoying it. To save myself, I had to work my ass off. I don’t think I could be such a professional drug user if I wasn’t a professional asshole who sold drugs. Someone might look at me and say, ‘He’s on a roll,’ and I am. At the same time, I have a really hard time staying on a roll. I have a drug problem.”

Crazy Town was formed in 1995 by Shellshock and Bret “Epic” Mazur. Other members included Charles Lopez, Mark White, DJ Rick One and Adam Bravin.

After releasing the single “Butterfly” in 2000, the group achieved great success.
