‘Create a sign-up sheet’: Chicago-area lawmaker calls on rich residents to open their homes to migrants

Local Illinois lawmakers are proposing giving residents the opportunity to house immigrants in private residences.

At last week's Naperville City Council meeting, Councilman Josh McBroom proposed a novel solution to the immigration crisis hitting the Chicagoland area. It involves wealthy residents voluntarily opening their homes to immigrants in need of a place to live.

“Given the fact that I don't support using other people's money for housing and assistance. I know there are a lot of people who care and we live in a caring community. I think so,” McBroom said.

“Let's find out who is willing to help,” he continued. “We have a very affluent community with a lot of large homes, and what I would like to do is direct our staff to create a registration sheet for individuals who are willing to take in immigrant families. If any of you do so, may God bless them.

“I think we need to find someone who is willing to take in immigrant families,” the latter added.

The city of Naperville said in a statement that it is not moving forward with McBroom's proposal at this time, but city officials will formally consider it at a future meeting.

City Administrator Public Relations Officer Said:

The Naperville City Council has asked staff to prepare a future agenda, and the council may consider creating an opportunity for residents to sign up to volunteer to host immigrants. The City Council has not made a final decision or taken any final action on the issue. A City Council meeting date for the matter to be discussed has not yet been set. No further details will be released until the board provides further direction.

Naperville, a suburb of Chicago, is located about 30 miles from the Windy City. Not a sanctuary city. On the other hand, Illinois is a sanctuary state, with Governor JB Pritzker (Democratic) expand the policy, “The most welcoming state in America” for immigrants and immigrants.

At least six migrant buses have arrived in Naperville since last month. According to the Chicago Tribune.

But given the rate at which migrants are being brought across the border to areas like Chicago, it's almost certain that more will arrive in the city in the near future.
