Hilary Swank expressed gratitude, but I don’t feel the same way.
The co-creators of Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” shared that they had attempted to get Swank, who is 50, involved in a sequel series to the iconic “Karate Kid.”
Yet, the Oscar-winning actress, known for her role as Julie Pierce in the 1994 film “The Next Karate Kid,” graciously declined the offer.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg discussed this development.
Heald mentioned that they reached out to her early on, aiming to involve her as the sixth and final season was approaching production. They had wanted to see if she could fit into the storyline with a commitment less than ten episodes.
Heald added that they were imagining her in an arc similar to what Elizabeth Shue did on the show.
Shue reprised her role as Ali Mills in the last two episodes of the third season after initially starring alongside Ralph Macchio in the original “Karate Kid” back in 1984.
However, Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg couldn’t get far in their attempts to connect with Swank, as they reached out to her representative to introduce themselves.
Heald explained their thought process behind her potential involvement, noting that they considered how to weave her character into the existing story without overburdening her.
Ultimately, she was in a place where she felt it wasn’t feasible for her to engage with the project.
Heald described Swank’s response as respectful, mentioning she likely had other commitments, such as new motherhood—she welcomed twins with her husband, Philip Schneider, in April 2023—and was involved in producing her own content.
Despite the missed opportunity, the creators still harbor hopes for Swank to return as Julie Pierce in a possible “Cobra Kai” spinoff.
Heald reflected on how that connection to the legacy remains significant for them. They felt a bit disappointed but weren’t willing to compromise their overall storyline just to include every character.
If there’s a chance to revisit this universe later, it might just turn into something remarkable, Heald concluded.
This story was discussed with a representative for Swank regarding any comments.
“Cobra Kai,” which first appeared on Netflix in 2018, wrapped its sixth and final season in February and continues to follow the journeys of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, set 34 years post the original “Karate Kid” film.
Though Swank’s participation didn’t pan out, the series successfully reintroduced other familiar characters to join Macchio and Zabka in their ongoing story.
Additions include Yuji Okumoto from “Karate Kid Part II,” along with other returning figures like Shawn Kanan and Thomas Ian Griffith.
Recently, Macchio also reprised his role in “Karate Kid Legends,” which premiered on May 30.
In this latest installment, Jackie Chan returns as Mr. Han from the 2010 movie. Macchio remarked that evolving in this role means continuing the cherished legacy, focused on passing down wisdom positively.
Pat Morita, known for portraying Mr. Miyagi, passed away in 2005 at the age of 73.
