Crenshaw commends Mexico for removing cartel chief 'El Mencho'

El Mencho Killed in Major Anti-Cartel Operation

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) stated that the recent military operation in Mexico, which resulted in the death of “El Mencho,” the alleged leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), marks a significant step in the fight against fentanyl production and trafficking.

Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as “El Mencho,” was confirmed dead following a military action on Sunday morning, as reported by Mexico’s defense authorities.

During an appearance on “Sunday Night in America,” Crenshaw noted that the CJNG is among the most notorious and feared cartels in Mexico, particularly in producing fentanyl that finds its way onto American streets. He referred to it as “the most militarized cartel by far,” speaking to its intimidating presence.

He characterized CJNG as a “terrorist insurgency,” mentioning that cartel members operate with military-like precision, equipped with advanced weapons including RPGs, drones, and IEDs.

Crenshaw commended the Mexican government’s recent strategies to target dangerous cartel figures and highlighted how U.S. intelligence assistance proved essential for this operation. He specifically praised Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Civil Protection, Omar Halfucci.

He further noted that the Jalisco cartel attempted to assassinate Halfucci in Mexico City back in 2020, saying, “So, hats off to him, because he’s now leading the charge against the cartels… It’s probably pretty good revenge for him. So, in Mexico, we finally have some good people in office that our administration can actually work with.”

El Mencho rose to prominence following the capture of former Sinaloa cartel head Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, with a staggering $15 million bounty placed on his head. Over the last 15 years, the CJNG has transformed from a local gang into a significant global human trafficking entity based in Jalisco.

While the news of El Mencho’s death has emerged, government officials have cautioned about potential confrontations in Jalisco and ongoing criminal activities across the U.S. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico has advised residents in certain states to remain sheltered due to escalating tensions.
