Crime Trends in New York City
While there’s been a notable decrease in major crimes, New York City is still grappling with a concerning rise in reported rapes, especially over the past year.
Recent figures released indicate that murders fell by almost 14% in the second quarter, with robberies down over 7.8%, and felony assaults decreasing by 2.3% year-over-year.
Additionally, from June of last year to this June, there was a 6.4% drop overall, with a 1.1% decline compared to the previous year’s second quarter.
Mayor Eric Adams shared with reporters that shootings have also seen a significant reduction, with 100 fewer incidents reported compared to last year during the same timeframe. In fact, when comparing the first half of this year to the same period in 2021, shootings have plummeted by 54%.
However, a troubling aspect remains hidden in these numbers—the increase in rape incidents, which seems to contradict the overall downward crime trend.
Statistics show that there were 517 reported rapes in the second quarter of this year, a rise from 448 during the same quarter in 2024, highlighting a worrying pattern over recent years.
Looking at more recent trends, last month’s rapes have surged by over 20% compared to the previous year, and there’s been a 57.6% increase over the past 15 years.
Tish, an official in the NYPD, acknowledged the statistics, noting that the rise in rapes is partly due to changes in state laws that took effect in September 2024, which aimed to broaden the legal definition of rape.
She mentioned, “This change allows for a clearer comparison in the coming fall as we analyze year-on-year data.”
Furthermore, police are urging that rape is likely underreported and encourage victims to contact the NYPD’s special victims department for assistance.
Adams emphasized the necessity of a robust safety plan during summer, acknowledging the community’s concerns during this season.
Despite anxieties, he pointed out that the overall number of shootings decreased significantly—from 107 last June to 75 this year, marking a 22.4% reduction in the second quarter as well.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish reported that New York City witnessed the lowest number of shooting victims and cases in recorded history during the first half of the year, attributing this success to strategic efforts by the department.
Overall, the statistics reveal a complex picture: while violent crime rates are declining, the persistent rise in rapes remains a critical challenge for the city.
Finally, the data indicates that murders in New York City have significantly decreased over the past decades—down to 381 reported last year from much higher figures in earlier years. Last month’s murder count was also reduced to 31 compared to 42 in June 2024.
