Critics condemn the reveal of Will Byers' gay storyline in 'Stranger Things' on Netflix.

Critics are expressing outrage over the penultimate episode of *Stranger Things*, particularly taking issue with Will Byers’ coming out scene, which some have called “disgusting.” They argue that the show’s creators prioritized political messaging over storytelling quality.

In the recent episode titled “The Bridge,” Will gathers his friends and family to reveal his feelings, stating he’s “just like them” except that he “doesn’t like girls.” Fans have reacted by suggesting the timing felt forced, especially with the backdrop of battling the villain Vecna.

A user named X expressed frustration, labeling the scene as “LGBTQ+ nonsense” and criticized Netflix for focusing on Will’s coming out at a pivotal moment, linking it to the idea that Will’s powers come from “embracing his sexuality.” They pointed out a villain’s threat that Will would be rejected by his friends if they discovered his true feelings.

Another commenter wondered, “How did *Stranger Things* go from an incredible series to having Will’s revelation as the only solution to defeat Vecna?” This added to the chorus of discontent regarding the pacing, acting, and overall plot of the final season.

Brandon Leslie, who leads Florida Voices and Lightline News, commented on a tweet about the Duffer brothers, suggesting that Will’s journey to face Vecna was also a metaphor for self-acceptance, though he found it “horribly coercive.” He lamented that a young boy couldn’t confront dark forces without coming out publicly.

Besides the controversial scene, viewers noted dissatisfaction with the season’s pacing and storyline. One fan remarked that the final season resembled the rushed ending of *Game of Thrones*, echoing sentiments of a chaotic and incomplete conclusion. Comments ranged from calling the plot weak to criticizing the acting, with suggestions like, “Why bother watching this?”

Netflix has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the backlash. Ratings for the fifth season have reportedly hit an all-time low, with audience scores dropping significantly on review platforms.

On the other hand, there were also positive reactions. Many fans celebrated Will Byers, considering him the heart of the show. Supportive posts filled social media, with one user urging others to hold onto their love for the series, despite any grievances about the recent episodes. They emphasized that, regardless of how subscribers feel about the finale, the show holds a special place in their hearts.
