Crockett Criticizes Trump for Recent Comments
On Wednesday, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) called out President Trump for his comments, labeling him as “racist and wrong.”
She expressed her frustrations on X, stating, “Trump is racist and never misses an opportunity to be wrong. Every day he finds new, embarrassing ways to prove it.” She pointed to a specific moment during a White House event with Africa leaders where Trump asked the president of Liberia about his English skills, saying, “Ask the president of Liberia where he learned English when he was literally at the peak of his official language.”
“I’m sure being blatantly offensive isn’t a way to do diplomacy,” she remarked.
Trump was at the White House hosting several African leaders for a trade conference. After an introduction from Liberian leader Boakai, Trump praised his English, saying, “That’s good English, that’s beautiful. Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?” He then continued, noting, “Where did you get your education? In Liberia? Well, it’s very interesting. It’s beautiful English.”
While English is the official language of Liberia, the country also has its own indigenous languages and varieties known as Liberian English.
Boakai, who speaks with a West African accent, laughed off Trump’s remarks during the event and didn’t directly respond to his praise.
Crockett, a member of Congress’s progressive Caucus, has been a vocal critic of Trump and often challenges his policies. Trump, in turn, dismissed her criticisms and referred to her as “a seriously low IQ individual.”
In response to Crockett’s latest comments, White House spokesman Harrison Fields said in a statement that she is “more suited for VH1 reality TV than as an elected official from Capitol Hill.” He added, “Jasmine Crockett has the brain abilities of a jellyfish and is perhaps the last person to criticize anyone’s intelligence, especially when comparing her to the president she breathlessly supports, the dilapidated and weak Joe Biden.”
