During a recent podcast interview, Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett shared that she was “crying in tears” after witnessing the forced removal of California Senator Alex Padilla from a press conference held by the Department of Homeland Security in June.
Crockett, a guest on comedian Hasan Minhaj’s show, reflected on the incident that week. She expressed her emotional reaction, stating, “There were no warnings at all. They played a loop of what happened to Senator Padilla, and I literally started crying, breaking with tears,” as she recalled the video being shown on television.
She emphasized the significance of Padilla’s role, mentioning, “It’s hard to imagine, even just looking at Senator Padilla. This is the first Latino senator California has ever had.” Crockett criticized the lack of respect shown towards him, pointing out, “He’s a state senator, and there’s no degree of respect for him, no position, no humanity.”
Crockett also voiced her concerns about how the current administration operates, saying, “It tells us how sinister this administration is.” She argued that no one should be subjected to such treatment for exercising their right to free speech.
The incident in question occurred on June 12 at a press conference in Los Angeles, where Kristi Noem was present. As Padilla entered, he was immediately confronted by Secret Service and FBI agents. He reportedly failed to identify himself right away, which escalated the situation.
Padilla eventually declared, “I’m Senator Alex Padilla,” during the fray. However, he was forcibly removed from the room and temporarily handcuffed as the press conference continued.
Following the incident, Noem did meet with Padilla, but the video of his removal quickly went viral, generating substantial media attention. While some Republicans accused Padilla of staging the encounter, over 200 Democrats from both chambers condemned the “unprecedented incident.”
This tense event took place during a time of rising unrest in Los Angeles related to an ICE operation, contributing to a broader environment of violent protests. President Trump responded by mobilizing the National Guard in the area.
