Suspects set up a fake car sale on Facebook Marketplace in Peoria, Illinois, on Monday and attempted to rob two men who showed up looking for a potential transaction, police said. told WMBD-TV.

Police said the purported sellers led potential buyers to an alley near the 2100 block of West Lincoln Avenue around 5 p.m., after which shots began to be fired.
Police told WMBD that once the two victims entered the alley, several people attempted to rob them. During the scuffle, the would-be robbers opened fire, and one of the victims also fired, the department said.
Police told WMBD the victim, who was armed with a gun, eventually fired one shot, hitting one of the robbery suspects, adding that the suspect who was shot died at the scene.
A police spokesperson said: “The investigation revealed that this was a planned robbery and there was no intention to sell the vehicle.”

WMBD said the victim who pulled the trigger legally owned the gun in another state and had a permit to carry it from one state to another, and was released without charge. he added.
