Shooting at Minneapolis Church Tragedy Draws Responses from Christian Leaders
A tragic shooting occurred at the Announcement Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to 17 others.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Robert Westman, who was previously known as “Robin,” took his own life at the scene following the mass shooting as families gathered for prayers during the first mass of the Catholic school year.
In the aftermath, various Christian leaders turned to social media to share their grief and offer prayers for those impacted by the incident.
Greg Lowry
Rev. Greg Lowry of Harvest Christian Fellowship reflected on the tragedy in a blog post, describing the attacks as “pure evil.” He noted the presence of disturbing messages on the weapon used, including references to the Holocaust and questioning the existence of God.
In response to the shooter’s inquiry, “Where is your God?” Lowry emphasized that “God is with suffering.” He quoted Psalm 34:18, stating, “The Lord is near the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit,” and asserted that in times like these, we must hold on to God’s promises.
“Evil has targeted places of worship, yet even in our darkest moments, God remains close to those who are hurting,” he affirmed.
Franklin Graham
Evangelist Franklin Graham, head of the Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Association, also called for prayers following the shooting. He urged his followers to pray for the families of the slain children.
“Pray for the families of the two children murdered at the Announcement Catholic Church in Minneapolis,” he wrote on social media.

Pope Leo XIV
Pope Leo XIV expressed his condolences following what he termed a “severe tragedy” at the church, a message communicated through Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda of St. Paul and Minneapolis. His note conveyed sorrow for the loss of life, particularly that of the children.
“While honoring the souls of the deceased children, I pray for those injured and for medical professionals who are providing care,” the Pope’s message stated.
He also extended blessings to the community, urging them to find peace, courage, and comfort during this trying time.
Jack Graham
Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas, shared his personal experience with tragedy on social media, highlighting that God offers comfort during difficult times.
“Where is God during tragedy? I can relate personally,” he reflected, recalling how his family coped after the murder of his father in 1970. Despite their grief, he spoke of God’s presence guiding them from darkness to light.
He encouraged prayer for those suffering, referencing Psalm 34 again to illustrate that God is near to the brokenhearted.
Where is God when tragedy strikes? I can answer this on a very personal level. My father was brutally murdered in 1970. But God’s comfort was there… He led us from the darkness to the light…
Samuel Rodriguez
Samuel Rodriguez, pastor of New Season Church and president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, also addressed the tragedy, stating the importance of prayer despite criticism from various quarters.
“We will not succumb to fear, nor will we be silenced by critics. In light of this tragedy in Minnesota, we will double our prayers,” Rodriguez asserted.
He emphasized the need to cover the children in prayer and remain steadfast in faith, declaring that they would protect their children spiritually.
“Our prayer is for our Heavenly Father to surround them with protection. We will serve His purpose in their lives,” he concluded, invoking the name of Jesus in his prayers.
We will not succumb to fear, nor will we be silent by our critics. In the face of this tragedy in Minnesota, we are doubling our prayers.
