Controversy Over Prayers After Minneapolis School Shooting
Vice President JD Vance criticized former White House press secretary and MSNBC host Jen Psaki for her remarks about the recent tragic shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, which left two children dead and 17 others injured.
Vance responded to Psaki’s comments, stating, “Prayers don’t really address the deeper issues. They don’t stop gun violence in schools or provide parents with the assurance they need to send their kids off to school. What good are prayers when we’re facing such loss?” Psaki had expressed similar sentiments on social media earlier, emphasizing that simply offering thoughts and prayers isn’t enough.
“Prayers don’t go crazy enough. It won’t end school shootings. How can parents feel safe sending their kids to school? That isn’t what’s going to bring these children back.”
Vance followed up with another post reflecting on the left’s stance on prayer. He questioned the notion that praying for victims could be seen as a strange action in times of tragedy.
“Among the bizarre left-wing culture wars, this has to be one of the strangest. How can we be criticized for praying for the innocent amidst such hardship?”
Current White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt also weighed in, calling Psaki’s comments “insensitive” and “disrespectful to faith-based Americans throughout the nation who believe in prayer’s power.”
“I found my predecessor’s comments to be incredibly rude and inappropriate,” Leavitt stated at a press briefing.
Some Democratic leaders echoed Psaki’s sentiments, and the Minneapolis Mayor, Jacob Frey, cautioned against merely discussing “thoughts and prayers,” noting that the victims were praying at the time of the shooting.
“This isn’t just about thinking and praying. These kids were genuinely praying during their time at church as school began.”
Frey, who has embraced interfaith initiatives, recently became the first major U.S. city mayor to permit the broadcasting of Islamic calls to prayer five times daily.
The shooter, identified as Robert, a 23-year-old transgender individual, tragically died from injuries sustained during the incident, which involved setting fire to a church window. Authorities have stated that the motives behind the attack remain unclear.
After the incident, officials executed search warrants at multiple sites, uncovering additional firearms during the investigation.
