Minor Cruise Ship Accident Near Fiji’s Monuriki Island
A small cruise ship recently struck a coral reef close to Monuriki Island in Fiji, a location famously featured in the Tom Hanks film “Cast Away.” The cruise company involved has now identified what may have led to the mishap.
Blue Lagoon Cruises reported that the incident occurred on April 4, when one of its vessels hit a finger reef during inclement weather. In a statement, they noted, “While the investigation is still in its initial phases, conditions were calm for the anchored vessel. However, a heavy squall seems to have dragged the anchor towards the reef, ultimately causing it to run aground.”
The company indicated that there were around 30 passengers on board, along with about 30 crew members at the time of the accident, according to reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation citing Fijian Navy officials.
Rescue efforts began around dawn when a high-speed ferry arrived to assist with the evacuation. Blue Lagoon Cruises stated that all guests, along with non-essential crew, were successfully evacuated along with their belongings.
Passengers were ultimately taken back to Port Denarau, where Blue Lagoon Cruises provided hotel accommodations and alternative activities. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among passengers or crew members.
This incident is part of a broader pattern; in recent years, there have been several emergencies involving cruise ships entangled with coral reefs. For instance, in 2025, the expedition ship Coral Adventurer became stranded on a reef near Papua New Guinea, leaving around 80 guests stuck for several days, as per an investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
In another case, a New Zealand Navy ship ran aground off Samoa in 2024, catching fire before sinking, necessitating the evacuation of its entire crew.
Monuriki Island, located in Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands, is a small, uninhabited area known for its pristine white sands, rugged cliffs, and lush tropical vegetation surrounded by rich coral reefs. It has drawn attention as a filming location for “Cast Away,” where Tom Hanks starred.
After the movie’s release, Monuriki became a favored spot for day trips and is often referred to as “Castaway Island,” though it’s different from another nearby resort island with a similar name.
Despite its newfound fame, Monuriki remains undeveloped, with no permanent residents. Visitors often come to hike, snorkel, and capture moments at picturesque locations, including the well-known “Wilson” Beach.
