Cruise ship crimes reach a two-year peak, casting a negative shadow over the industry

Crime rates on cruise ships departing from the U.S. have increased over the past two years, which, understandably, could cast a shadow over travel plans, say experts. Statistics from the Ministry of Transport indicate that between January 1 and March 30, 2025, there were 48 reported crimes on ships, including 23 rapes, 10 sexual assaults, and 7 assaults.

Robert McDonald, a former Secret Service special agent and current criminal justice lecturer at New Haven University, expressed concern that this trend could hinder the cruise industry’s image. Having coordinated security for various high-profile individuals globally, he underscores how such negative reports can create a troubling atmosphere for potential cruisers.

“Sometimes, cruise companies might hesitate to disclose these incidents, fearing they’ll attract further negative attention—similar to how airlines handle delays or emergencies,” McDonald noted. He emphasized that this negative information can overshadow the industry, making it less inviting for those looking to invest their time and money in a cruise experience.

McDonald pointed out that the nature of cruises, with large numbers of people in confined spaces, contributes to the likelihood of crime. “Big gatherings, like sporting events or cruises, tend to see an uptick in misconduct, especially when alcohol is involved,” he said. “The atmosphere can lead to situations spiraling out of control, regardless of whether it’s at a resort or on a ship.”

In a recent incident, two undocumented immigrants were arrested for allegedly abusing minors on a Royal Caribbean cruise that set sail from Miami. Jose Prudencio Diaz, 36, and Ricardo Daniel Mondragon Rial, 37, faced charges related to child abuse during a disturbing episode involving a sauna onboard, where a 14-year-old boy reported they began indecent acts in his presence.

Additionally, there were chaotic scenes last April when a mass brawl broke out among Carnival Cruise Line passengers as they disembarked at Galveston Cruise Terminal. In videos that surfaced, several individuals were seen pushing each other amidst the uproar.

The company reacted by banning 24 passengers from future voyages, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards violence. “The authorities have been involved,” a spokesperson for Carnival remarked. “We simply won’t accept this kind of behavior.”
