Cruise Ship Rescues Four from Distressed Boat
Passengers aboard a cruise ship traveling from Texas to Mexico erupted in cheers as crew members successfully rescued four individuals from a makeshift boat in the Gulf. Reportedly, this marks the second time in a short span that a cruise ship in the Caribbean has executed a similar rescue.
On Monday, February 23, the Regal Princess responded to an emergency call when a small boat carrying four people experienced difficulties while en route from Galveston to Cozumel.
“The Regal Princess acted promptly to assist a vessel in distress, safely bringing the four individuals aboard,” the cruise line stated in a communication shared with various media outlets.
After their rescue, the four were evaluated by the ship’s medical team. “Ensuring their safety and well-being remains our top priority,” the cruise line emphasized.
Social media posts later revealed footage showing what looked like four men in a rusty, makeshift boat crafted from metal and wood. White sheets and tarps flapped with the wind as passengers aboard the Regal Princess cast water overboard in a rescue effort.
Passengers had a sense that something was off when the ship began altering its course. Melody Almogavar Barr, one of the travelers, noted, “I suspected something unusual since the ship started circling.” The atmosphere turned celebratory when the captain announced the rescue’s success, leading to cheers from those in the theater.
“It’s evident that many aboard care about the welfare of others, and we’re thankful to be part of that community,” Barr remarked.
The cruise company indicated that the rescued individuals would be taken to the ship’s next scheduled port, where local authorities and support services would be waiting.
Princess Cruises underscored the importance of maritime rescue obligations, stating that vessels must assist anyone in peril at sea unless doing so poses a significant risk to their own crew and passengers.
The Regal Princess had departed Galveston on February 22, embarking on a seven-day voyage across the Western Caribbean, which includes stops in Cozumel and Roatan, before returning to Texas on March 1.
Interestingly, this incident follows a recent rescue by a Carnival Cruise Lines ship also headed to Cozumel, which successfully aided five people from yet another distressed vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and provided assistance, allowing the ship to continue its journey uninterrupted.
Recent reports reveal that incidents like these have become somewhat common in the region, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by small vessels in the Gulf.
