A Jimmy Buffett-themed cruise ship that promises guests a “paradise” was given a failing grade by health authorities earlier this month.
Sea Paradise Margaritaville failed an unexpected health inspection from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on May 1st. The inspection was conducted by Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) personnel.
The ship was given a failing grade of 83, according to an accident report available on the CDC website. You need 86 points to pass.
One of the complaints was that there were six bathers in the whirlpool, which was designed to accommodate up to four people.

The report also highlighted hygiene concerns surrounding eating and drinking on cruises.
Investigators were also concerned about whether the crew washed their hands while working with food.
“Gloves worn by crew members handling the ice-making parts of the ice-making machine were stored with the tools,” the report said. “It is unclear whether the crew washed their hands before donning gloves. There is a food handler glove box in the bulkhead next to the ice machine that could be used instead.”

Investigators found water bottles “stored on dirty pallets” and the cooking area was dirty and poorly lit. Another crew member was unable to “demonstrate competency” with a chemical to clean lettuce.
“Crews who cleaned the lettuce heads and soaked them in fruit and vegetable antibacterial solutions were unable to demonstrate the ability to confirm the concentrations of the chemicals used,” the CDC said. “The crew failed to properly use test strips to confirm the concentration of the solution and did not know what an acceptable test result was.”
