Cruz claims Democrats are extending the government shutdown for Election Day.

Senator Ted Cruz has accused Democrats of prolonging the government shutdown for their own political strategies as the Election Day approaches, suggesting that the impasse may soon come to an end.

This ongoing shutdown, which has become the longest in U.S. history at 35 days, has had a significant impact on travel across the nation and has affected the health of millions. Notably, it concerns the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Democrats in the Senate are standing firm, refusing to back Republican initiatives that don’t include an extension of federal health care funding. However, Cruz argues that there is more at play.

“Today, they’ll likely push to keep the government shut. Why? Well, it’s Election Day, and they’re eager to distance themselves from the radicals,” Cruz stated during an appearance on “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday.

Cruz expressed concerns that if the government were to reopen, extremists would feel comfortable remaining at home, a position he believes Democrats will ultimately reverse following the election.

“I really hope they lose, and by Wednesday or Thursday, they’ll come back and say, ‘Alright, let’s get the government running again,’” he added.

Election Day is bringing voters out for several key positions, including the mayoral election in New York and gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey.

Cruz criticized Senate Democrats for wanting to demonstrate loyalty to their radical left base, emphasizing their disdain for former President Trump. “This isn’t just about policy; it’s about saving Schumer’s political skin and avoiding challenges from figures like AOC,” he remarked.

Democrats continue to seek an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire in 2025, having rejected multiple Republican attempts to reestablish government operations.

Despite the challenging situation, Cruz is optimistic, predicting the shutdown might very well conclude within the week.

He remarked, “I think it’ll wrap up this weekend or early next week, but not today, that I can tell you.” He anticipated another vote later in the day, which he expected would see all Republicans vote in favor of reopening the government, while predicting a Democratic rejection.
