Cruz Confronts Zuckerberg on Pointless Warning for Child Porn Searches

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Thursday criticized Meta’s chief executive over the company’s seemingly nonsensical decision to place warning signs on images of possible child sexual abuse material (CSAM). CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Cruz asked Zuckerberg Wednesday during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on online child sexual exploitation. The Texas senator asked Zuckerberg about how many hashtags were used on Instagram to help child predators find child sexual abuse material.

cruise I got it. Despite the warning, Instagram says “these results may include images of child sexual abuse” before asking users if they want to retrieve the resource or see the images. It said it displayed a warning screening.

Mr. Cruz asked Mr. Zuckerberg, “Mr. Zuckerberg, what the hell were you thinking?”

“Okay, Senator, the basic science behind it is that when people are looking for something problematic, it’s possible to help them get help instead of just blocking it. “It’s often helpful to direct them to something,” Zuckerberg said.

Mr. Cruz then criticized Mr. Zuckerberg for allowing the option to view the results even though the images could be CSAM.

Mr. Cruz asked Mr. Zuckerberg to commit to allowing him and the public to learn more about this.

“Senator, I will look into it personally,” Zuckerberg said.
