Sen. Cruz Calls Out Gov. Newsom on Social Media
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) took to social media recently to mock California Governor Gavin Newsom, posting a clown emoji in response to Newsom’s claim that a Texas lawmaker had called him “illiterate.” Cruz clarified that he was actually referring to Newsom as “historically illiterate.”
Newsom, who has dyslexia, responded strongly, stating, “For Ted Cruz to call people with dyslexia illiterate is a new low, even for him.” It’s an interesting back-and-forth—especially since, well, it touches on a sensitive topic.
Cruz emphasized that he wasn’t calling Newsom illiterate. He said, “I’m not saying you can’t read, you.” [clown emoji]. He went on to clarify his point, mentioning historical events like Eisenhower’s federalization of the National Guard to enforce desegregation laws in Arkansas, which he used to argue that Newsom lacks historical knowledge.
There was some support for Newsom’s view. Conservative radio host Clay Travis remarked that Cruz’s comments did indeed reflect poorly, implying that “historically illiterate” could be misinterpreted as a more direct insult regarding literacy.
In a heated exchange, Travis added, “He called you ‘historically illiterate,’ which means you don’t know basic history. You’re an idiot if you’ve never heard the word and don’t know what it means.” It’s funny how these political debates often spiral into personal territory, isn’t it?
This incident sparks a broader conversation about communication and respect in political discourse, revealing just how deeply personal and political discussions can become.
