Cuba Claims 4 Individuals Killed in Speedboat Shooting Were Sent from the U.S. to Enter the Country Illegally

Conflict Between U.S. Speedboat and Cuban Coast Guard

A U.S.-registered speedboat was reportedly fired upon by the Cuban Coast Guard, with the Cuban government claiming that the ten passengers onboard were defectors armed and attempting to invade, as well as cause terrorism on the island. This assertion was made public shortly after reports emerged about the incident, which allegedly resulted in injuries to a Cuban officer, with four individuals killed and six others hurt.

However, no concrete evidence has been provided to back the allegations that those on the boat were Cuban exiles sent by the U.S. for a covert mission to infiltrate Cuba. The Cuban authorities stated that many of the ten individuals had a known background of criminal behavior and violence.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the situation, indicating that the U.S. government was in the process of confirming whether the victims were American citizens or permanent residents.

Two passengers, identified by Cuban authorities as Amijiil Sánchez González and Reordán Enrique Cruz Gómez, are reportedly wanted for their involvement in activities related to terrorism that could threaten national security, according to the Associated Press.

Additionally, Havana announced the arrest of Duniel Hernández Santos, claiming he was sent by the U.S. to support the infiltration of armed units into Cuba and had since confessed to such intentions. As of now, the exact purpose of the boat and its passengers in Cuban waters remains uncertain.
