Cuban Influencers React to Maduro’s Arrest
Following the news of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro’s arrest, Cuban influencers Yoel and Mari Díaz expressed their excitement. This Arizona-based couple is well-known for their outspoken criticism of communism, and they’ve built a substantial online following by highlighting the differences between life in left-wing regimes and the freedoms offered by American capitalism.
In a conversation with Fox News Digital, they discussed why Maduro’s capture brings hope to Cubans. “The arrest of Nicolás Maduro makes us really happy,” Mari shared. “Not just Venezuelans and Cubans, but many others worldwide are celebrating. People who have suffered under dictatorship truly understand this.” Yoel added that the circumstances leading to Maduro’s capture involve the U.S., although he also hinted at complications with other nations.
The Broader Context of Maduro’s Case
“Nicolás Maduro is a product of imperialism, particularly Cuban imperialism,” Mari remarked. Yoel drew comparisons, saying that Maduro represents similar authoritarian principles seen in former Cuban leader Fidel Castro and Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez. “It’s all linked,” he mentioned.
Reflecting on their emotions during the news of the capture, Yoel expressed hope for the Cuban populace. He recounted hearing people say, “Finally Venezuela is free,” and wondered, “Can you imagine if the Cuban people could achieve that?” A video of Yoel’s reaction garnered significant attention, with Mari posting it online.
“Cuba is literally the Hunger Games,” Yoel stated, summarizing the dire conditions. Mari echoed his sentiments, expressing excitement about prospects for Cuba’s liberation. The couple noted that Cubans and Venezuelans share many cultural similarities.
Mari commented on the severe impact of socialism in Venezuela, emphasizing the plight of those fleeing to the U.S. “Every year, you see makeshift ships coming from Cuba to Miami and millions of Venezuelans crossing borders. That’s all you need to know about socialism,” she explained.
Understanding Maduro’s Government
Yoel expressed his belief that many critics of Maduro’s government do not grasp the full context. “They don’t realize Maduro was elected multiple times and still holds a semblance of power,” he noted, explaining that the political situation is more complex than it appears. He described Maduro’s regime as a “democratic socialist government,” while also condemning the atrocities committed against the Venezuelan people.
As a message to supporters of communist ideals, Mari said, “They are communists because they’ve studied it. We oppose it because we’ve lived in it.” With an impressive Instagram following of over 232,000 and significant numbers on TikTok and YouTube, the Díaz couple uses their platforms to share their views on the challenges of living under oppressive governments.
Maduro recently made his first court appearance in New York following his arrest, where he pleaded not guilty to charges including narco-terrorism.
