Alex Bregman’s New Contract with Chicago Cubs

Alex Bregman made a bold decision, and it seems to have worked out well for him. Over the weekend, he reportedly signed a five-year contract with the Chicago Cubs. This deal is said to be worth $175 million and includes a no-trade clause, which is quite significant.

Before this move, Bregman had agreed to a three-year contract with the Boston Red Sox right before the 2025 season started. Interestingly, that contract had options for him to opt out after each year. After a taste of free agency, he chose to secure a long-term position with Chicago.

During his lone season with the Red Sox, Bregman posted a batting average of .273, boasting an OPS of .821 along with 18 home runs. Unfortunately, he did miss all of June due to a quadriceps injury. The Red Sox finished third in the American League East that season, with a record of 89 wins against 73 losses. They still have remaining financial obligations to him, needing to pay $5 million in January 2028 and $2 million every June from 2035 to 2044.

Bregman, who is now 31, originally spent nine seasons with the Houston Astros. While there, he won two World Series titles and was named an All-Star twice. Over his time with the Astros, he played in 1,111 games, with a batting average of .272, an OPS of .848, and hit 191 home runs.

As he joins the Cubs, the team is aiming for a playoff spot after a relatively successful 2025, where they finished with a record of 92 wins and 70 losses, though they were edged out by the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series.

In the Cubs’ lineup, Bregman will be teaming up with players like Seiya Suzuki, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Dansby Swanson, which should make for an interesting dynamic going forward.
