Chicago Cubs Catcher Miguel Amaya Injured Again
Catcher Miguel Amaya of the Chicago Cubs is once again on the injured list, just a day after his return to play. His comeback coincided with the Cubs’ 4-1 victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto on Wednesday night.
After the game, Cubs manager Craig Counsel shared the unfortunate news, revealing that Amaya had sprained his left ankle during the eighth inning. “The X-rays are negative, which is a relief,” Counsel commented. “But there’s significant swelling—it’s not ideal. It’s just bad luck, and, unfortunately, we’ll have to be without him for a while.”
During the game, it appears Amaya was running toward first base when he sustained the injury. He landed awkwardly on his left foot, which caused him to fall hard. Medical staff quickly attended to him, and Counsel noted that the severity of the injury became clear rather quickly. “You always hope it’s a minor issue, but right away it looked serious,” he added.
Counsel described the incident as a “strange baseball play.” Amaya was visibly upset as he was taken off the field in a medical cart. What’s more frustrating is that this injury came just one day after he made his return from a 60-day stint on the injury list due to a left oblique strain. Before the first injury, he had been hitting .280 with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 27 games.
Rookie pitcher Kade Horton referred to Amaya as a “special player” and expressed concern about his teammate’s well-being. “I really don’t want to see this happen to anyone, especially him,” Horton said. “He’s a great teammate, and we’re all praying for him.”
