Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya had to be helped off the field after a rough fall while attempting to run to first base during a 4-1 win against the Blue Jays in Chicago.
The incident occurred in the eighth inning after Amaya hit a ground ball. As he raced to beat the throw at first base, he seemed to get his left foot caught at the edge of the bag. This caused him to roll his ankle, and he leaped into the air, landing harshly on the ground.
Once the play was dead, it became obvious that he was in significant discomfort. The first base coach and the team’s trainer rushed over to assist him.
After a few tense moments, he was placed on a cart and taken off the field.
Amaya clutched his face as he tried to cope with the pain.
Manager Craig Council later informed the media that Amaya is dealing with a left ankle sprain and will likely be placed on the injured list.
Fortunately, the X-ray results came back negative.
This incident unfolded shortly after Amaya had just been activated from the 60-day injured list, making it doubly disappointing considering his recent struggle with an oblique injury.
“It’s incredible to be back,” Amaya shared with reporters after his return on Tuesday. “I’m thankful to be healthy and here to support my teammates. It was a long road back. I listened to my body and played some games in Arizona to ensure I was ready,” he added.
Cubs broadcaster Jim Descheys summarized the situation quite poignantly, expressing, “I can’t remember the last time I felt this much sympathy for someone. It’s heartbreaking to see what happened to Miguel Amaya.”
