Carlos Mendoza has struggled to make a positive impression in Chicago, to the point where calls for his dismissal were heard even from the Cubs’ own studio team back in April.
This past Sunday, while the Mets faced an 11-game losing streak following a walk-off loss to Chicago, Cubs postgame host Cole Wright humorously touched on Mendoza’s future during the show. “I don’t work at CareerBuilder, but maybe Carlos Mendoza should polish up his LinkedIn,” he remarked, noting his own failures at managing late-game scenarios.
Elise Menaker added, “That’s what you get when you pitch to Nico Hoerner; he’s one of the best with runners in scoring position.”
Former Mets player Cliff Floyd criticized the recent four-game series against the Phillies, calling it a complete disaster on the Marquee Sports Network.
The game’s outcome drew considerable attention, particularly regarding Mendoza’s decision not to intentionally walk Hoerner in the 10th inning with one out and the game tied, especially with a runner on third base.
Horner, arguably the team’s top contact hitter, managed a sacrifice fly that clinched the game 2-1 and capped off the series. Mendoza explained post-game that he was hesitant to put Hoerner on base due to concerns he might steal second, thus diminishing the potential for a double play.
Horner’s batting average stands at .325, making him the key offense player, in contrast to Michael Busch, who was hitting .164 and went 0-for-4 in that game.
As the Mets prepare for their next match, they find themselves with only 7 wins and 15 losses, tying for the worst record in the league alongside the Royals. Despite the pressure, team president David Stearns has publicly supported Mendoza’s position, stating that he believes Mendoza is fulfilling his role effectively.
Looking ahead, the Mets will host the Twins in a three-game series, followed by games against the Rockies this weekend.
