Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Colten Brewer struggled in Saturday’s game and was placed on the disabled list after responding poorly.

Brewer left the game after getting just two outs in the third inning against the Los Angeles Angels, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks.

When Jorge Lopez took his place on the mound, Brewer went into the Chicago dugout and decided to punch the wall in frustration.

Marquee Sports Network reported Brewer broke his non-throwing hand after punching the dugout wall.

He was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a fractured left hand, and the Cubs opted to sign Hunter Bigge to replace him.

In the past, such frustration has led to injuries.

In 2004, Yankees pitcher Kevin Brown was forced to miss a game after punching a wall in the team’s clubhouse and breaking two bones in his non-pitching hand.

In any professional sport, emotions can certainly run high, and during those moments we’ve seen coolers and water jugs being hurled on the sidelines and in dugouts.

In baseball especially, buckets of sunflower seeds or gum are often thrown at players, and sometimes baseball bats are used to smash them.

Venting one’s anger in another way is obviously the ideal way to go in a situation like this, but if one does that, avoiding injury is paramount, and Brewer will likely spend time rehabbing an injury that never needed to happen in the first place.

Brewer, a 6-foot-4 right-hander who appeared in three games for the Yankees last season, has had a tough 2024 season with the Cubs so far.
