The usually friendly atmosphere at Wrigley Field took a turn during the Cubs’ 7-5 victory over the White Sox on Monday night, as a violent brawl erupted among fans in the bleachers. It was quite a sight, ending with one fan attacking another.
This incident drew the attention of Cubs player Pete Crow-Armstrong, a candidate for the National League MVP, who contributed to the game with a walk-off two-run homer and also hit a home run earlier in the match, marking his entry into the 30-30 club.
“The fights in the stands are disappointing and honestly a little nauseating,” he remarked. “But, I guess the people in the stands got to play their own game too.”
It’s unclear what sparked this chaos, but a video surfaced showing a fan in a white Cubs jersey yelling at a group of fans wearing White Sox black and gray jerseys below him.
At one point, a voice could be heard saying, “It’s not that serious,” as tensions began to rise. A man in a sleeveless gray shirt started pointing and, soon enough, fans were tweeting, with some calling for security to intervene.
A fan with a beard and a blue jersey seemed to try and calm the situation, gesturing for the group below to come closer, while the Cubs fan in white kept shouting “b—h.”
During this confrontation, fans in gray appeared especially agitated, and a stadium employee in red was seen talking to those in white jerseys.
Things escalated dramatically when a fan in blue attempted to kick someone in the front row, igniting the conflict as a fan in gray retaliated by throwing a drink at him.
Following that, fans in white retaliated by tossing drinks and cups back, which especially angered those in gray clothing.
And then, as Jim Ross might say, the real action began—fists were flying, and it seemed like fans in blue and white were quickly overpowered.
A distant video captured the moment when Cubs fans executed a brutal 4-on-2 assault. Both combatants ended up on the ground, with yet another Cubs fan jumping in to land a punch on the man in blue.
A white-clad fan tumbled down several rows as the chaos continued, prompting a spectator to repeat, “It’s not that serious.”
The brawl escalated into a two-on-one situation, with one fan in gray relentlessly taunting the blue jersey wearer.
As the man in gray continued to strike, the fan in blue raised his arms defensively. Someone capturing the scene on video could be heard exclaiming, “Jesus, get that security guard in here!”
One user then shared a photo showing a gray-shirted fan trying to engage with a blue-clad fan while others nearby raised their arms in frustration. Security appeared to be present but were not intervening.
Eventually, the fan in blue was seen with a bloody lip and marks on his head.
“He needs to go to jail,” commented a spectator while the gray-clad fans vacated the area as stadium staff swarmed in.
Eventually, stadium officials regained control and stated that everyone needed to leave as armed police officers arrived to manage the situation.
One fan was overheard telling the police he had to chase down a fan in a gray tank top and seemingly tried to run before being stopped.
A video ended just as a police officer intervened to speak with him.
The two teams will face off again on Tuesday as part of the Crosstown Classic, with the White Sox currently leading the AL Central and the Cubs holding the first wild-card position in the NL.
