Cuomo Warns of Republican Gains If Mamdani Wins NYC Mayoral Election

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo expressed concerns on Monday that if Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani secures victory in the upcoming mayoral election, Republicans might capitalize on that success in future state contests.

During an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Cuomo addressed speculation regarding Donald Trump’s advisors potentially offering a cabinet position to competing candidate Eric Adams, which he suggested could bolster his own chances in the race. However, Cuomo dismissed the notion, asserting that Republicans would actually be quite pleased if Mamdani won. He believes they would leverage her victory as a political weapon in the 2026 elections.

“That’s absurd, right? If you’re a Republican, you’re hoping for Mamdani to win,” Cuomo remarked. He foresaw that her election would embolden Republicans, allowing them to portray Democrats as being overtaken by socialism. According to him, this perception could potentially lead to Republican gains across various New York offices, including Congress and possibly the governorship.

Cuomo has reportedly reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for comments, yet responses remain pending.

Self-identified as a democratic socialist, Mamdani has championed progressive policies throughout her campaign, such as publicly-run grocery stores and free public transit. Nevertheless, she recently claimed to have “evolved” her stance on some issues, including a prior tweet advocating to “refund the police.” She clarified these thoughts do not represent her current campaign direction, emphasizing a focus on future goals rather than past positions.

“My view is that many of my critics, especially Andrew Cuomo, prefer discussing fictional narratives about me instead of engaging with my actual platform,” Mamdani stated. “They’d much rather highlight old tweets than confront what I’m proposing for 2025.”

Cuomo positioned himself as the primary contender capable of beating Mamdani in this race. Yet, a recent Siena University poll indicated Mamdani leading by 19 points. It’s an interesting dynamic—one can only wonder how things will unfold as the election approaches.
