Cuomo criticized for avoiding questions about sexual harassment after the debate

New York Mayoral Debate Highlights

During Wednesday night’s debate for New York City mayor, much of the focus was on personal attacks among the candidates, particularly concerning former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s sexual harassment allegations and Zoran Mamdani’s association with radical politics.

The decision to launch relentless criticisms during this final opportunity to win over voters generated significant buzz on social media. A lot of attention was on Cuomo’s reply to Mamdani’s question about addressing the victims who accused him of harassment.

Political content creator Brian Baez remarked, “I’ve never seen such anger in a debate.” His statement reflected a common sentiment about the heated exchanges.

Podcast host Brian Allen added, “Mamdani really shook things up. He confronted Cuomo directly, mentioning Charlotte Bennett, one of the women who accused Cuomo, who was present but felt she couldn’t speak up because of alleged intimidation from Cuomo’s lawyers.”

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander commented, “Charlotte Bennett is a hero in New York.” Interestingly, Lander, who once faced assault charges that were later dropped, lost to Mamdani in the primary race for mayor. He shared a video of the audience cheering for Mamdani, further escalating the debate’s intensity.

After the debate, one of Cuomo’s accusers, Karen Hinton, stated that Cuomo’s responses demonstrated he lacked the moral character to lead as mayor. Another whistleblower, Lindsey Boylan, declared, “I was one of those women. I faced harassment and legal abuse during my time working for Cuomo. And now he wants to be mayor?”

Cuomo’s choice to skip the press area post-debate, heading straight to a Knicks game where he was spotted with incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, also caught the attention of many online.

While there were criticisms of Cuomo’s performance, some responses were more favorable. Some observers noted that if Cuomo had channeled the debate energy into his campaign earlier, he might not be in this precarious position.

Pro-Israel activist Uri Cohen claimed on social media that “Cuomo is winning against Mamdani in this debate,” while NY State Representative Elise Stefanik asserted that both Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa effectively dismantled Mamdani’s arguments throughout the night.

Stefanik later labeled Mamdani a fraud, emphasizing concerns over his connections to radical politics and past comments on serious issues. Cuomo also sharply criticized Mamdani during the debate, exposing his inexperience and controversial views.

The debate also raised questions regarding Mamdani’s past associations, particularly a photo with a Ugandan lawmaker known for anti-LGBTQ+ policies. Cuomo zeroed in on statements Mamdani had made that seemed to endorse radical positions, for example, involving controversial phrases related to Israel and Palestine.

Laura Loomer, an ally of Trump, pounced on post-debate remarks by Mamdani regarding anti-Semitism, arguing that his statements were disingenuous considering his support for certain laws. Meanwhile, Curtis Sliwa seemed to command respect for his debate performance, even though he remains behind in the polls compared to Cuomo and Mamdani.

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani exclaimed, “Sliwa showed courage—we have a potential great mayor in him,” while Joanne Arriola of the Republican delegation claimed Sliwa was clearly the debate’s victor.
