Cuomo gains momentum with late endorsements as NYC contest with Mamdani tightens.

Cuomo Gains Ground in NYC Mayoral Race

As the mayoral race in New York City approaches its final days, former Governor Andrew Cuomo is attracting significant last-minute backing. Recent polls indicate an independent candidate in the lead over Democratic hopeful Zoran Mamdani.

It’s unclear if this uptick in support will be enough to secure a win for Cuomo on Election Day. However, Mamdani asserted he’s not taking anything for granted as the election draws near.

“It’s crucial for New Yorkers to focus in the coming days. What we’re witnessing is… a remarkable turnout,” Cuomo mentioned in an interview. “People here are scared, and that’s driving the engagement.”

Mamdani heads into the election with a comfortable lead, although it’s decreased since early October. The latest poll shows him ahead by a notable margin.

Cuomo Expresses Concerns

Cuomo has voiced fears regarding Mamdani’s potential to win, emphasizing his lack of experience. He stated, “Mamdani winning is quite possible. He has no real experience for this role.”

Recent polling revealed Mamdani leading by 16 points, with 47% of respondents indicating support for him. In contrast, Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, received 15%, and Cuomo, as an independent, garnered 31%.

Current Mayor Eric Adams, who has endorsed Cuomo, saw a mere 2% of the vote despite his withdrawal from the race. Nonetheless, he will remain on the ballot.

Some of Mamdani’s lead has diminished from earlier polling numbers, indicating a tightening race as the election approaches.

Endorsements and Campaign Dynamics

Cuomo has ramped up his efforts to bridge the gap with Mamdani, receiving numerous high-profile endorsements recently. Former Mayor Mike Bloomberg reaffirmed his support during a recent event, citing Cuomo’s extensive experience.

Cuomo has criticized Mamdani, pointing out that his experience is insufficient for managing a city as complex as New York. Since resigning in 2021 amidst scandal, Cuomo has been trying to regain public trust.

Former Governor David Paterson also threw his support behind Cuomo, citing his qualifications for leadership. Meanwhile, Congressman Tom Suozzi expressed his disdain for Mamdani’s platform, referring to it as a “socialist manifesto.” He emphasized his preference for Cuomo’s approach.

While moderate Democrats are consolidating around Cuomo, some Republicans have started to back Mamdani, dissatisfied with his progressive policies, which include various social initiatives funded by taxing corporations and wealthy residents.

Cuomo reiterated that a vote for Sliwa could inadvertently aid Mamdani, a sentiment shared by various influential figures urging support for his campaign.

This week, Cuomo held events with prominent leaders from New York City’s Muslim and African communities, emphasizing the importance of their backing and support in the election.

On the flip side, Mamdani has been engaging actively with voters, holding events that resonate with various community groups, making clear that he does not intend to take his prospects for the mayoralty lightly.

“You can’t take anything for granted,” Mamdani said. “That’s how Cuomo lost in the primaries. We won’t make that mistake.”
