Curt Cignetti shares how his time with Nick Saban transformed his perspective: 'Every day felt like 4th-and-1'

Difference Between Curt Cignetti and Lane Kiffin

Over the weekend, Lane Kiffin stirred the pot on Twitter, targeting college football fans with some jabs. In contrast, Dunn pointed out that Curt Cignetti seems entirely focused on the game, spending his time coaching rather than engaging with social media. Kiffin, however, appears to be more preoccupied with his online presence, which, you know, isn’t exactly the best sign.

If you’ve been keeping an eye on football lately, you probably know I have a soft spot for Indiana’s coach, Curt Cignetti. His two seasons in Bloomington have been nothing short of remarkable—so remarkable, in fact, that I’m almost ready to pop him onto a list of “Greatest Coaches of All Time.”

Not many could have turned around a struggling program like he did, especially when resources were scarce and interest was low. To think, if someone had said five years ago that Indiana would be in a national championship conversation, I likely would have laughed.

Cignetti’s success, of course, can be attributed to various influences. I was chatting with Josh Pate recently, and he brought up a name that often resonates in coaching discussions: Nick Saban. Pate noted how Saban’s approach to “process-oriented thinking” left a lasting impact on him during his own training.

Cignetti shared that his time on Saban’s original staff in 2007 taught him invaluable lessons about what it takes to be a championship coach. “He had a philosophy and a wealth of experience,” Cignetti reminisced. It seems Saban’s meticulous planning on his first day with Alabama gave Cignetti a blueprint he still holds dear.

Interestingly, Cignetti reflects that his year alongside Saban was more enlightening than his previous 28 experiences as an assistant coach. The urgency to win every day is something that has resonated deeply with him. He remarked, “With Coach Saban, every day felt like a battle between No. 4 and No. 1,” underscoring the need to combat complacency and strive for excellence daily.

Listening to Cignetti recount these insights makes it clear why he’s thrived as a head coach. But the question lingers: just because one was near Saban doesn’t mean they could consistently apply that wisdom effectively.

Several coaches who were once Saban’s assistants haven’t fared particularly well when given their own programs. Yet, Cignetti’s ability to implement Saban’s principles in his unique way is what sets him apart. Following Saban’s retirement in early 2024 created a significant gap in college football, and now, surprisingly, Cignetti seems to be a leading figure reminiscent of Saban’s earlier days.

The outcomes he’s achieved speak volumes. Seriously, just look it up.
