Security Measures for GOP Candidate Curtis Sliwa
On Monday, GOP mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa shared that he’s been granted 24-hour security due to a “trustworthy” threat compelling him to withdraw from his longshot campaign. Interestingly, the NYPD has no records of any such threat.
Sliwa, known for his role with the Guardian Angels—who have been patrolling the subway for many years—mentioned needing protection after receiving threats that targeted his wife over the weekend.
As pressure mounts for him to step back, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo recently declined a one-on-one debate with Democratic candidate Socialist Zoran Mamdani, following Mayor Eric Adams’ announcement to not seek re-election.
While Sliwa didn’t criticize the competing campaign during a press event, he did express concern, suggesting, “Perhaps there’s someone out there who thinks I should exit the race, or it will lead to a serious outcome for New York City.”
Reflecting on his campaign, Sliwa noted, “This marks the first time in my life I’ve needed around-the-clock security,” recalling a past incident where he survived being shot five times during an alleged mob hit.
He remarked, “Some of these threats seem really credible,” yet the NYPD confirmed no reports of significant threats against him.
A spokesperson for the department reiterated there are no documented threats, emphasizing security concerns had not reached their attention.
Additionally, Sliwa’s spokesman claimed that he and his wife, Nancy, had met with the NYPD’s campaign security officer and Intel chief regarding these threats.
The campaign is covering the costs for Sliwa’s security, according to his spokesperson.
In previous remarks, Sliwa accused a Cuomo supporter of attempting to bribe him into dropping out of the race. However, he insisted he isn’t considering exiting.
Amid increasing political violence nationwide, Sliwa’s concerns echo similar worries from Mamdani, who faced threats last spring, leading him to enhance his security following his easy victory in the Democratic primary in June.
