Cynthia Nixon Encourages LGBTQ Support for Zoran Mamdani
Cynthia Nixon, known for her role in HBO’s Sex and the City, recently spoke at the “Gay for Zoran” rally, urging LGBTQ community members to support Zoran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist front-runner for New York City mayor. This comes after Mamdani met with Ugandan officials advocating for laws that would impose life sentences on homosexuals.
“Homosexuals who support Zoran! Join them, campaign in their neighborhoods, knock on their doors, and tell them sincerely why you’re voting for Zoran and why they should too,” Nixon expressed.
A video of her speech was shared on Instagram by Gays for Zoran, a group of LGBTQ+ New Yorkers poised to vote for Mamdani.
Mamdani, who holds dual citizenship in Uganda and the United States, was seen meeting with Rebecca Kadaga, a Ugandan official known for supporting anti-LGBTQ policies, including life sentences for homosexuals. Kadaga shared a photo with Mamdani on social media, wishing him luck in his campaign.
In 2012, Kadaga had declared plans to pass stringent laws against homosexuality, framing them as a “gift” to Ugandans. This sentiment was echoed later when the government upheld an anti-homosexuality law further criminalizing LGBTQ individuals, possibly including the death penalty for severe offenses.
Under this law, individuals convicted of consensual same-sex acts could face life imprisonment, while attempts could invoke a ten-year sentence for a first offense. Human Rights Watch highlighted that this law is among the most oppressive worldwide for LGBTQ rights, with additional restrictions on groups promoting LGBTQ rights.
Mamdani has faced significant backlash regarding his association with Kadaga, with his team asserting he was unaware of her role in Uganda’s strict anti-LGBT laws.
