D-Day Hero to Receive Posthumous Honor 81 Years Later
Recently, the 81st anniversary of the D-Day invasion was commemorated in Normandy, France, and it brought attention to the bravery shown during that time. The lesser-known battles that took place in Normandy helped establish a crucial foothold for the Allied forces.
One significant clash occurred at a small river bridge near St. Merelis, where paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division landed on June 6, 1944. Their mission was to maintain their position against German troops threatening the American forces headed for Utah Beach, a key landing area.
Among those involved was Staff Sergeant William Owens, a 31-year-old from Iowa. For three days, he courageously fought against overwhelming odds as his unit dwindled from 45 men to just 12. Utilizing multiple machine gun positions and leading a team with bazookas, he and his men successfully disabled four German tanks, leading to the death of 275 enemy soldiers. Historians regard their actions as pivotal during the Normandy invasion.
After extensive research and advocacy efforts in both the Pentagon and Congress, Owens was posthumously honored during a recent ceremony, upgraded to a distinguished service cross. Chris Donohue, the commander of the US Army in Europe and Africa, praised Owens’ actions as an exemplary standard to live by.
Owens, who passed away in 1967 at 54, left a lasting legacy. His family members shared their deep pride during the ceremony, with great-grandson Harris Morales expressing disbelief at the honor, describing it as something that felt surreal.
The significance of Owens’ heroism resonates today, particularly in light of ongoing global conflicts. Morales noted that “81 years isn’t too long” for such qualities to still matter. General Donahue reiterated the importance of continuing to learn from past heroes like Owens, as the military navigates transformations in an ever-changing landscape.
