Police said the incident began on Jan. 20, when an officer discovered a metal container filled with hardened concrete while a storage unit at King’s Storage in Pueblo was being cleaned.

When police searched the container, they discovered the girl’s body.

DNA tests confirmed that the remains are those of Yesenia Dominguez, who was only 3 years old when she went missing in the summer of 2018.

By January 31, police brought Mr. Minjarez and Mr. Dominguez, who was wanted on outstanding warrants, for questioning.

The couple told police the children may be in Phoenix, Arizona, but the investigation was unsuccessful, authorities said.

As police continued their investigation, they discovered that Dominguez’s girlfriend, Minjarez, who is not related to the children, owned the car, which was abandoned at a local scrapyard.

Officers then obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and found a suitcase in the trunk.

Inside was the body of a boy later identified as Jesus Junior Dominguez, who was 5 years old when he went missing in 2018.

Mr. Minjarez and Mr. Dominguez are both charged with two counts each of murder and abuse of a corpse, and Mr. Dominguez faces an additional charge of theft of government benefits.

Both men were held on $2 million bail and are scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, according to court records.

He admitted that in the past, police had asked him to investigate the welfare of the children, but they were unable to locate the children and no missing persons report had been filed.
