a The Daily Show The reporter was stunned to find that a focus group of Black voters in New York was evenly split on whether they would support President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. “Oh, I wasn’t expecting that,” he said.
“Do I have to say his name? I don’t want to, but it’s probably Trump,” said a voter named Darryl. The Daily Show Correspondent Josh Johnson asked, “Who will you be voting for in 2024?”
Johnson then asked the remaining five Black New Yorkers who they would vote for in the November election, and quickly learned that three of the six panelists said they would support Biden and the remaining three said they would support Trump.
“Okay, so we’re evenly split,” Johnson responded. “That’s — oh, I didn’t expect that.”
Introducing a segment exploring whether black voters are “out with Trump,” Johnson noted that a recent New York Times/Siena poll found that 23 percent of black voters support Trump, up 19 percentage points from October 2020, when Trump’s approval rating was 4 percent.
“I’ve been a Democrat my whole life,” Darryl explained, “and for the most part, Democrats always make a lot of promises that they can’t deliver on.”
See below:
Erica, who also voted for Trump, agreed, saying Democrats “just use the issues of the African-American community as a platform, make promises to get us to vote, and then when we vote and we all win, it’s like, what the hell happened?”
“I’m not a big fan of Trump. He doesn’t respect black people,” said a Biden supporter, to which Erica countered, “Does Biden respect them? Has Biden apologized for what he said?”
In particular, in 1993, Biden, who was then a senator, Warned He spoke about “inner city predators” and added that “we have no choice but to remove them from society,” which many took as a criticism of the black community.
Darryl added that Biden also said, “If you don’t vote for me, I’m not coming back.”
Johnson then handed each panelist two sticks, one with a raised fist and the other with the middle finger.
of The Daily Show The correspondent then played footage of Trump speaking at a Black Conservative League banquet and asked each panelist to respond with either a fist in support or the middle finger in disapproval.
“This light is so bright to my eyes that I can’t see many people out there. But all I can see are black people, I can’t see white people. That’s how far I’ve come!” Trump said in the video clip.
All three Trump supporters on the panel raised their fists to show their support for Trump, while the three Biden supporters opted for sticks with their middle fingers up.
“I have a dark sense of humor,” Erica laughed, and Daryl said, “That’s the problem with media soundbites.”
Johnson then played a clip of Trump talking about the legal battles he has faced.
Black conservatives understand better than most that some of the greatest evils in our country’s history came from corrupt systems that targeted and sought to control others. You understand that. I think the reason black people are standing with me so strongly now is because they know that what happened to me can happen to them.
Again, the panelists answered in the same way.
But one Biden supporter appeared to acknowledge Trump’s comments, saying: “There are two systems of justice. We are not allowed to do the same things that white people are allowed to do.”
When Johnson asked Trump supporters if “if more charges were laid” and “if things got even worse” they would change their vote, Erica replied, “Probably not.”
“Pay attention and listen to the facts. Don’t listen to the rumors,” she says, “and actually start doing your research and making sure what’s being presented to you is actual fact. It takes digging.”
A stunned Johnson responded: “I didn’t sit on this committee to change anybody’s mind, and I clearly don’t.”
