Dakota and Elle Fanning share that there is no competition between them as sisters

Exploring the Bond Between Dakota and Elle Fanning

Dakota and Elle Fanning have been in the public eye since they were kids, starting their acting careers in the 2001 film “I Am Sam,” where Dakota played Lucy and Elle portrayed a younger version of her. They’ve navigated the complexities of Hollywood fairly well, managing to avoid some of the pitfalls that many young actors face.

In a recent interview with *Vanity Fair*, there was a light-hearted discussion about how they managed to stay grounded. Elle joked about their upbringing, saying, “We’re so f-Edup. You don’t know half.” She emphasized that despite being young in a demanding industry, she never felt she missed out on any experiences clients often associate with child stars.

Dakota shared insights into their sibling dynamic, asserting there’s “zero” competition between them. “We obviously share a lot, but we are very different,” she explained. This distinction, she believes, helps mitigate any competitive feelings. While growing up, they purposely allowed each other room to explore their own careers, which they find rewarding as adults looking back.

Fast forward to 2025, and Elle reflects on her identity in relation to Dakota. “I just want to do everything she does,” she remarked, acknowledging that people often refer to her as Dakota’s sister. It’s a title she embraces, noting that she can feel both pride and pressure associated with it.

Dakota has, over the years, changed how she views her role as an older sister. “I want her to have everything she wants,” she stated, highlighting a family ethos of shared success. Each sister has over 70 credits to her name, a remarkable achievement in their nearly three-decade-long careers, but Elle points out that Dakota’s presence has helped smooth her pathway in the industry.

<p” Dakota was always there to protect me,” Elle said, adding that her sister took on responsibilities even when she sometimes didn’t fully understand them. She expressed gratitude for Dakota’s support, noting that her protection often came with a sense of responsibility that Dakota felt deeply.

Reflecting on their childhood, Dakota recalls how the internet gossip culture was daunting. She admitted she once requested a friend to stop posting photos online, revealing that her concerns were less about career implications and more about personal comfort. “It wasn’t even about ‘This would ruin my career’,” she explained, recognizing past insecurities but also stating she kept her struggles private.

Both sisters agree there’s a strong protective instinct between them, as Dakota felt a sense of looking out for Elle throughout their careers. “When I feel I’m out of control, it makes her uncomfortable,” Dakota shared, emphasizing that they balance each other out in this regard.

Ultimately, both sisters have developed a deep bond that, while influenced by their careers, transcends the typical sibling relationship. “It’s fulfilling now that we’re adults,” Dakota noted. They continue to support each other, celebrating one another’s successes while navigating the complexities of a shared industry.
