WWE Incident Analyzed by Giants Players
DETROIT — Kam Skatebo, who had previously undergone surgery on his right ankle, wasn’t in danger of re-injuring himself during a recent WWE event at Madison Square Garden.
Skatebo was on the season-ending injured reserve but found himself in a “heated” moment with Dominik Mysterio, where the rookie running back pushed the wrestler, only to be pushed back.
“There were guys literally right behind him,” noted rookie wide receiver Darren Kumble. He added that the railing prevented a backward fall, and, honestly, there was just no chance he could fall forward either.
“It all felt a bit staged. They were acting all dramatic like they were really angry when, you know, they really weren’t,” Kumble said, reflecting on the scripted exchange. The Louisiana native was thrilled to experience Madison Square Garden for the first time as part of the Giants’ player engagement initiative.
Kumble, Skatebo, Abdul Khater, and other teammates were briefed ahead of time about how the scripted moments would unfold during the match.
“They explained it like we were stepping into a comedian’s act. Schultz would be next to us, they’d push him, and Cam would have to push back,” Kumble described. “They sort of nudged Cam but not with real force. It certainly didn’t seem like a genuine push.”
Kumble, who had spent most of the season on the practice squad, made his debut in the NFL just last week against the Packers. Kind of a surreal moment for him, really.
As for the coaching side, interim head coach Mike Kafka has utilized his past experience with the Chiefs to make adjustments to the Giants’ practice schedule. For instance, he shifted the special teams segment to the beginning of practice to avoid interruption later. “We took it from Kansas City. It’s a way to change things up a bit. There’s no definitive right or wrong; it just brings a different approach,” Kafka explained.
To add to the roster moves, WR Kumble and LB Swayze Bozeman were promoted from the practice squad, while RB Eric Gray was activated from injured reserve, set to make his season debut. Unfortunately, rookie TE Thomas Fidon has been placed on IR due to a foot injury.
