William Smithers, the veteran actor recognized for his portrayal of oilman Jeremy Wendell on the popular soap opera “Dallas,” has passed away at the age of 98. News of his death emerged on June 15, but the exact cause was not revealed.

Smithers began his journey by joining the Navy as a sailor first class, serving until his discharge post-World War II in 1946. He kicked off his acting career in 1951 with a Broadway debut in a production of “Romeo and Juliet,” earning a Theater World Award for his performance. This marked the beginning of a fruitful career, rich with roles in both film and television, alongside various theater appearances.

He is particularly remembered for his stint on “Dallas,” where he portrayed Wendell from 1981 through 1984. His character, known for its formidable nature, left a lasting mark on the show and its fans.

Smithers had notable appearances in early television as well, including a role as David Schuster in “Peyton Place,” the first prime-time drama in 1965-66, and he even featured in the original “Star Trek” episode titled “Bread and Circuses” in 1968.

His filmography includes notable titles like “Attack,” “Trouble Man,” “Scorpio,” and “Papillon.” Additionally, Smithers showcased his talent on various television series such as “The Defenders,” “Combat!,” “It Takes a Thief,” “Mission: Impossible,” “The Mod Squad,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” and “Ironside.”

Beyond acting, Smithers was involved in a significant legal battle with MGM. He filed a lawsuit claiming the studio violated his contract during his time on the CBS drama “Executive Suite.” He argued that the agreement stipulated he should not be paid less than any cast member, except for three specifically named individuals. The court ruled in his favor, and the case has since become a landmark in entertainment law, being included in academic teachings.
