Dallas Baptist University clears campus due to threats before visit from HUD Secretary Turner

Event Cancellation at Dallas Baptist University

This morning, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner and Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson had plans to speak at Dallas Baptist University. However, the event was suddenly called off due to unverified threats received by the institution.

As a precaution, the university was evacuated on Thursday morning, January 22nd. The cancellation was reported by local news.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the university has decided to cancel classes today,” the school commented.

Turner was set to address attendees at 9:30 a.m. as part of the HUD Faith Center’s Opportunity Zone Summit. This summit highlights areas identified by the governor as “economically distressed communities.”

Meanwhile, Johnson was also scheduled to discuss topics like “public-private partnerships” aimed at supporting underserved communities, as noted by the news report.

According to a statement from the university, “Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to cancel classes today, January 22nd. The safety and health of our students, faculty, and staff remains our top priority. We will provide further updates as necessary while we assess the situation.”

The university acknowledged being aware of multiple unspecified threats concerning its campus, stating, “While no immediate danger has been identified, we are actively monitoring the situation in collaboration with law enforcement.”

This decision for an evacuation was taken to explore the credibility of these unidentified threats, resulting in all classes being canceled for the remainder of the day.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

Dallas Baptist University, established in 1898, currently serves over 4,000 students.

A spokesperson for HUD conveyed that the event was canceled due to safety concerns regarding the campus.

The Mayor’s Office has yet to provide a statement on the situation.
