Dallas Jenkins Shares Insights on the Similarities Between ‘The Chosen’ Season 6 and ‘The Passion of the Christ’

Insights on Season 6 of I Was Chosen

Dallas Jenkins, the creator and director of I Was Chosen, recently shared some insights about the upcoming sixth season during the K-Love Fan Awards in Nashville. He hinted that the portrayal of the Crucifixion will be less graphic than the depiction in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, explaining that it’s, well, not really a family-oriented scene either.

While Season 5 has just concluded its theatrical release and is set to begin streaming on Prime Video starting June 15, fans are already buzzing about what to expect in Season 6. It’s expected that the storyline will lead up to events prior to Jesus’ death, with Season 7 anticipated to cover the Resurrection.

Looking back, the 2004 film The Passion of the Christ was notorious for its graphic content, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time until recent years. Jenkins discussed the direction of Season 6, mentioning that he plans to capture the essence of the Crucifixion without resorting to extreme violence. He remarked, “If I tried to sanitize it, it wouldn’t be true to the real thing.”

Further explaining his approach, Jenkins noted that his series has, over five seasons, fostered a deep emotional connection with viewers. Consequently, he feels there’s less need for overtly graphic violence to make an impact.

Many consider I Was Chosen to be a landmark project in faith-based cinema, reaching over 250 million people globally and gaining support from a diverse audience, including celebrities like Chris Pratt and Whoopi Goldberg.

When asked about how he hopes viewers will perceive the entire series, Jenkins expressed a desire for people to grow in their love for Jesus after watching it. He noted the recent increases in Bible sales and literacy as promising signs that the series is making a positive impact, saying, “I think that’s the best legacy we could have.”

Season 6 is slated to debut in spring 2027.
