Damning complaint accuses Harvard’s DEI czar Sherri Charleston of extensive plagiarism

Harvard University’s plagiarism problem shows no signs of slowing down. That’s not just because disgraced former president Claudine Gay remains on the faculty. A new complaint filed with the university on Monday suggests that:
Affirmative action expert Sherry Ann Charleston, the university’s chief diversity and inclusion officer, may also be a resident plagiarist.

of
complaint The findings obtained by the Washington Free Beacon identify 40 instances of suspected plagiarism in Charleston’s two academic works, starting with his 2009 doctoral dissertation.

“Charleston’s paper contains quotes from other scholars verbatim, without quotation marks,” the complaint says. “Parts of Charleston’s doctoral thesis had previously been published verbatim by her advisor Rebecca Scott and others. Charleston quoted entire texts and paragraphs without quotation marks from the papers of other scholars. and then plan to add the correct reference somewhere in the footnotes at the end of the paper’ long paragraph. ”

In December, as the Harvard University plagiarism scandal was reaching its climax, Dr. Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars, said:
underlined Christopher Rufo, Director of New College of Florida, on the importance of plagiarized papers: “What does it mean that a doctoral dissertation is plagiarized? It means that the credentials are based on falsehoods.” So it’s effectively counterfeit currency.”

“Many universities have long had the practice of revoking the degrees of people who are later found to have plagiarized doctoral dissertations or committed research fraud during their doctoral studies,” Wood added. .

Said In a 2021 speech to students at Harvard University, he said, “A dissertation is not your magnum opus. It only proves, and always will, your ability to do original research. Good.” That’s right. You don’t have to try to be great.”

The complaint filed Monday against Charleston further states that at least 20% of the DEI czars
The only peer-reviewed paper The piece, which she reportedly helped her husband, LaVar Charleston, write, was published two years earlier in a 2012 Journal of Diversity in Higher Education paper.

The complaint notes that there is no acknowledgment that Charleston’s 2014 article “is essentially a reprint of a 2012 journal article by LaVar Charleston.”

The duplication of the two papers is unusual and reportedly the duplication may even violate copyright law. In addition to language, DEI Emperor’s 2014 paper reused methods, findings, and descriptions of what was being investigated from her husband’s previous papers.

“Approximately two-thirds of the section entitled ‘Findings’ in the 2014 paper was previously published as the ‘Conclusions’ of the 2012 paper,” the complaint states. . “What the 2012 study stated as ‘key findings’ is virtually identical to what the 2014 study stated as ‘results.’

Steve McGuire, a former political theory professor at Villanova University, suggested that “Shelly Charleston appears to have used the work of others without properly attributing it.”

“The 2014 paper appears to have been completely fabricated,” Peter Wood told the Free Beacon. “This is research fraud, pure and simple.”

Charleston received his Ph.D. He earned a degree in history from the University of Michigan and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Law.

She was appointed DEI czar at Harvard University on June 22, 2020, after initially serving as assistant vice chancellor for DEI and director of affirmative action at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Gay’s immediate predecessor, former Harvard University president Lawrence Bacow, described Charleston as “an interdisciplinary scholar whose work at the intersection of history and law will inform efforts to translate theory into practice to improve higher education.” announced at the time of her appointment.

In celebrating Charleston’s “scholarship,” Bacow gave partial credit to LaVar Charleston.

The Free Beacon noted that expert investigations into allegations against DEI czars have uncovered everything from minor plagiarism to possible data fraud.

It’s unclear whether Charleston will take a page out of Claudine Gay’s book and resign in shame as well.

gay
Resigned on January 2nd After facing nearly 50 plagiarism allegations involving seven of her 17 published works, including her 1997 doctoral thesis.

Gay portrayed himself as a victim, claiming in his resignation letter that he felt horrified by “subjecting personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus.”

Charleston, her husband, and the Journal of Negro Education reportedly did not respond to the Free Beacon’s requests for comment.

Charleston and Gay are not the only so-called Harvard academics accused of academic misconduct this month.

Blaze News recently reported that four research scientists on faculty at Harvard Medical School were accused of manipulating data in a study published earlier this month.

The four academics charged were Laurie Glimcher, CEO of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, one of Harvard University’s teaching hospitals; William Hahn, the institute’s chief operating officer. Irene Ghobrial, Clinical Investigator Research Program Director; Dr. Kenneth Anderson, Program Director, Jerome Ripper Multiple Myeloma Center;

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute announced last week that six manuscripts were in the process of being retracted, and another 31 were flagged as “requiring correction.”
