Damon Dash, once a key player alongside Jay-Z at Roc-A-Fella Records, has filed for bankruptcy in an attempt to escape nearly $5 million owed from a civil lawsuit, as stated by his legal team.
Dash submitted his bankruptcy petition in Florida earlier this month, claiming assets of less than $5,000.
A lawyer representing a creditor said, “It’s not going well.” Chris Brown, who is involved in the case, remarked that Dash seems to be trying to halt his financial downfall. However, many of his debts cannot be wiped clean through bankruptcy.
Brown noted the challenges of discharging intentional debts, referencing a high-profile case involving Rudy Giuliani. He also pointed out errors in Dash’s bankruptcy filing, likening it to claiming a Florida UPS store as a residence.
“What’s the point of that?” Brown questioned, highlighting the oddities in Dash’s documentation.
Moreover, Dash’s filing reportedly overlooks some of his business interests, listing assets improperly and even including properties already in public auction proceedings.
Interestingly, one of his most valuable assets—the rights to his life story—was left off the documents. Brown suggested it was intentional, saying, “That’s the biggest asset he has.”
Dash has a history of delaying tactics and evading legal obligations. Earlier this year, a federal judge sentenced him to jail for refusing to disclose property that could satisfy a $900,000 debt to filmmaker Josh Weber.
The judge expressed concerns, noting that failure to comply could lead to further legal action against Dash.
In the ongoing case involving Weber, it was mentioned that both parties would wait for a decision from a Florida judge before proceeding.
Last May, an attempt by Dash’s lawyer to withdraw from the case was denied, with the judge suggesting it was part of a broader strategy. It appears Dash may not be looking to switch legal representation anytime soon.
In another legal battle with writer Edwina Brooks, Dash reportedly destroyed crucial financial documents related to a nearly $100,000 judgment against him.
This week, he spoke openly about his bankruptcy filing in an interview, implying it was necessary to safeguard his assets amidst legal pressures.
During the same interview, Dash faced mocking from the host, who humorously suggested that his new nickname could reflect his financial situation. The light-hearted exchange highlighted the stark reality of Dash’s current financial struggles.
